Description: An illustration for The Eternal Husband by Fyodor Dostoevsky. The Illustration is depicting confused and stressed out Velchaninoff in the foreground and beaten up mentally unstable Pavel Pavlovitch in the background. Pavel Pavlovitch is wearing his famous hat with crepe, which attracted the attention of Velchaninoff and caused him much distress at the beginning of the book. You notice a bridge between the eternal husband and Velchaninoff. It symbolizes the characters relationship. In the middle of the bridge, there's a grave with a rag doll leaning against the cross. The little figure represents the dying girl (Velchaninoff's daughter.) "We are, I tell you, man, we are men of different worlds. Understand me! And between us two there's a grave!"
